Why should I bother putting
my content on a Windows Media server? What's the benefit for all that
expense
and
hard work?
-
The file now streams from a server on a dedicated stream
via mms://
as
opposed to bits and pieces via http://
Much
better
delivery
and
performance.
-
You have more control over what the player itself looks and acts
like, change information in the asx file and you change the look of the
player; open a new window at a
certain
time;
add
a
logo;
not the content itself.
-
Increased security since you are only pointing towards a stream
and not a file that can be downloaded and saved.
Can
I capture an asx file?
I get
alot
of
hits
from
the
search
engines
from
people
looking
to
"convert
"asx
to
mp3",
etc....;
You
have
to
realize
that
this
can
never
happen
since
you
are
only
copying
a
text
file
-
a
simple
set
of
instructions
-
which
just
happens
to
have
the
file
location
of
your
content, hidden
from
the
outside
world.
This
does
not
mean
that
you
could
not
set
up
a video recorder and
record
the
file;
or
even
via specialized
software
from
your video card
output;
but
that's
another
story.....
Something
to
keep in mind
when
you
are
doing
streaming
is
your
bandwidth
requirements. This
is
not
typically
something
you
can
do
from
home;
depending
on
the
number
of
visitors. The more people who are downloading
files
from
your
server, the more it will cost in
transfer;
or
bytes
sent
across
the
network.
If you are doing
significant amounts of
broadcasting you may
want to consider your
own server. We do
offer dedicated and
co-located servers for
streaming media; send
us an email for a
quotation...
Dedicated servers are
owned and maintained by
the ISP; with colocation
you provide the hardware
and we provide the
bandwidth and IP
addresses.
Keeping
it all straight
After
awhile having 2 separate
files for each piece of
content can be
confusing. I
suggest creating a
directory for each file
type; Example:
WMContent and WMStubs
and match the file name
to the content.
This is less confusing
and easier to work with
than a directory with
100 items sorted by file
type....

playlists, ad insertion and all sorts of other neat effects using Windows Media
.asx files.
