Kids, Computers and Music

We feel that to be considered a "musician" you should be able do more than string a few cool loops together, but perhaps we are just getting a bit too old.

The unfortunate truth is that learning to play a musical instrument takes about 10 years and most kids (and parents) just don't have time these days.  So, they spend alot of time playing computer games instead of some other worthwhile pursuit or outdoor activity.

Video games and chat give instant gratification; why not get with the program and:

Record it.  You can spend many productive hours learning how to record digital audio with a $500 recording interface like an MBox.

Bang a Gong  Perhaps a Roland digital drumset for the boys?  Hours of fun in the basement.  Somewhat pricey to set up ($1500+) but worth every penny if they spend 1000 hours beating the crap out of it; meanwhile learning alot about rhythm and control...

Be the MidiMan  To use Midi you should be a keyboard player.  If you have a child who is bored by Chopin, try a synthisizer.  If it's a computer keyboard that sparks some genuine interest and keeps them in the basement for hours, well; so be it.  The key is finding something that the child is interested in and then expanding on the theme; regardless of the instrument.

Visit my other site www.musiciansoft.com if you are interested in recording music on the computer.  You will need specialized software to make it happen, and this website gives you a good overview of what's out there.
