DESIGN A COOL MUSIC WEB SITE
Let
us show you some of the tips and tricks guaranteed to help you design cool web site - for
your band or whatever you want to say to the world |
| To
make a website
you need a
special
software
program to
design your
pages. You
can use a
program like
Microsoft
Word; although
it's a bit
cumbersome.
Tip:
Do a search
for FREE HTML
EDITORS on any search engines; they all offer free webspace;
sometimes even
with a domain
name included,
others where
you don't need
software at
all; it's all
done through
the
browser.
The
main idea is
that you are
making 1
homepage
(index -
default - asp)
and a couple
of pages
below, all
linked
together. |
 |
You
will normally use a WYSWYG
editors since
What You See Is What You Get .
From your computer
screen to the web in
perfect HTML
format. You
compose your
document just like
you would in a word
processor but when
you save it the file
extension is .html
instead of .doc and
it's magically
transported up to
the Internet.
These programs make
it easy for anyone
to confidently
publish a
website.
MAKE
IT DANCE
To
do any animation you
would probably want
to look at Macromedia Flash,
which is today's
standard - there are
many different
"bundles"
available, all with
with different
capabilities.
| We
like using
Microsoft
Front Page -
and the
features of
their
"server-side" FRONT PAGE EXTENSION
technology -
which add
flair and
functionality
to any
site.
These features
are only
available to
webs published
by FrontPage
to servers
that have
these special
applications
already
running.
|
 |
|
The
features supplied
by the
"host" -
or the computer
that is holding
your web - allows
you to add
databases, Java
elements and
search components
at the click of a
mouse. Our
sites run on the
latest Windows
20000 servers
which integrate
very nicely with
the software
package.
This feature may
cost more to
"host" -
you will have to
pay a bit more
each month.
But for ease of
use and to allow
you to get online
quickly and easily
there is no
substitute.
|
|
Time
for your own
.com? |
| If
you want to be
taken
"seriously"
on the
Internet
(e-commerce or
acceptance by
search
engines)
expect to have
to register
your own
domain (yourname.com)
for $70.00
U.S. which
covers you for
2 years.
You will also
need a
separate
"hosting"
account for
your .com
address in
addition to
your internet
connection
This account
"serves
"
your website
to anyone who
requests it
24/7.
You can do it
yourself if
you have a
"static"
IP address (Internet Protocol)
and a webserver
(usually your
home computer
that would be
left on at all
times).
|
 |
| Once
you have put
your pages
together you
then have to
send (or
"upload")
these pages
and graphics
to a computer
that is
connected to
the Internet
24/7 so when
someone
requests a
certain
document the
computer can
find it and
send (or
"serve")
it to
you. |
 |
|
There
are 2 ways to do
this. They
are:
|
| Use
FrontPage
This is the
most efficient
and elegant
solution.
It's a snap
and we can set
it up while
you are on the
phone.
Once your
"domain"
or .com has
been
"resolved"
ie: when
someone types
in your name
it goes to
your default
page and they
can browse
your web - you
simply open up
the software
as "open
web;
www.yourname.com,
authenticate,
open the page;
when you close
the page ONLY
THE CHANGES
are saved and
uploaded to
the
server.
When you
refresh the
page on the
Internet -
Viol - your
changes have
been made and
are live on
the web.
If you can use
Word you can
use FrontPage
to design
complex and
compelling
sites with
ease. |
| Use
FTP
(FILE TRANSFER
PROTOCOL).
Most commonly
used by ISP's
running
Linux.
No fancy (ie:
easy to use)
features to
make your life
easier; just
static
HTML.
This is a less
elegant
solution since
all files must
be uploaded to
make sure all
changes have
been
made.
Not
exceptionally
efficient but
it works all
the
same.
All you need
to make it
happen is
another type
of software
called FTP
(usually free
to
download).
All you have
to know in
most cases is
the hostname (www.yourISP.com/yourlogin)
your user name
and
password. |
|
|
Get
Spidered
Once you have
completed your
page you will
want to get
listed in the
search
engines.
Here's
how |
 |
| When designing your page we remind you to
KEEP THE FILE SIZE OF YOUR INDEX PAGE SMALL
Too many graphics and scripts can really
slow down the "loading" of your page over the internet. Internet surfers are very impatient and they will not wait for
slow-loading pages. Many people still have very slow
modems - don't loose them by making them wait 50 seconds to see the first picture of you
and the band. |
